  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract The higher the quality, the better the flavor.
  • 1 cup boiling water This helps bloom the cocoa for an intense chocolate flavor.
For the frosting and decoration
  • 2 cups whipped cream Homemade is best for a dreamy texture.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  3. In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  4. Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla to the dry ingredients and mix well.
  5. Stir in boiling water until well combined. The batter will be thin.
  6. Pour batter evenly into the prepared pans.
Baking
  1. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  2. Let cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer them to wire racks to cool completely.
Assembly
  1. Once cooled, layer the cakes with whipped cream and strawberries.
  2. Frost the top and sides with whipped cream.
  3. Decorate with chocolate shavings and additional strawberries.

Notes

Store leftover cake in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. You can also bake the cakes a day in advance.
