Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1.5 pounds sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed Choose organic if possible for the best taste
  • 0.5 teaspoon fine sea salt Adjust to your taste
  • 0.25 teaspoon dried thyme Optional, but adds a lovely herby note
  • 4 tablespoons butter at room temperature Feel free to use unsalted for better control over salt levels
  • 1-2 tablespoons honey Local honey can add a unique flavor profile
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground cinnamon or more for warmth
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground nutmeg Adds earthiness
  • to taste none ground black pepper A bit of pepper brings out the sweetness

Method

Preparation
  1. Boil Sweet Potatoes: Start by placing your cubed sweet potatoes in a medium pot. Cover them with water, add the salt (and thyme if you’re using it), and bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer and let them cook until fork-tender, about 8-10 minutes.
  2. Drain and Steam: Once your sweet potatoes are tender, drain them well. Return them to the pot over the lowest heat setting to steam off any excess moisture, for about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Mash: Add the butter, honey, cinnamon, nutmeg, and pepper to the pot. Using a potato masher, mash everything together until smooth and creamy. Check for seasoning and adjust as necessary, then serve hot.

Notes

These mashed sweet potatoes can be made ahead of time and reheated. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, or freeze for up to 3 months.
