Ingredients

For the Hamburger Steaks
  • 1 lb ground beef (choose 80/20 for juiciness) Look for grass-fed options for better flavor.
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs (use Panko for extra crunch) If gluten-free, almond flour is a good alternative.
  • 1 large egg (room temperature for easier mixing)
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt (Himalayan pink salt adds flavor)
  • 1/4 tsp ground black pepper
For the Gravy
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil (or olive oil for added flavor)
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced (Vidalia onions for sweetness) Caramelizing sweet onions enhances the gravy.
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth (homemade is best, but low-sodium works too)
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme Feel free to experiment with other herbs.
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently with your hands until just combined. Form into 4 equal-sized patties.
Cooking the Patties
  1. Heat vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook patties for 4-5 minutes on each side, until they achieve a nice brown crust. Set aside.
Cooking the Onions
  1. In the same skillet, add thinly sliced onions and cook over medium heat for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally until caramelized.
Making the Gravy
  1. Sprinkle flour over the caramelized onions and stir well. Gradually add the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5-7 minutes to thicken.
Combining and Finishing
  1. Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, spooning gravy over them. Cover and simmer for an additional 2-3 minutes.
Serving
  1. Serve Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy over mashed potatoes or rice, with steamed vegetables.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days, or freeze for up to 3 months. For extra richness, add a splash of heavy cream to the gravy.
