Method
Preparation
- In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently with your hands until just combined. Form into 4 equal-sized patties.
Cooking the Patties
- Heat vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook patties for 4-5 minutes on each side, until they achieve a nice brown crust. Set aside.
Cooking the Onions
- In the same skillet, add thinly sliced onions and cook over medium heat for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally until caramelized.
Making the Gravy
- Sprinkle flour over the caramelized onions and stir well. Gradually add the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5-7 minutes to thicken.
Combining and Finishing
- Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, spooning gravy over them. Cover and simmer for an additional 2-3 minutes.
Serving
- Serve Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy over mashed potatoes or rice, with steamed vegetables.
Notes
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days, or freeze for up to 3 months. For extra richness, add a splash of heavy cream to the gravy.
