Preparation
- Preheat the oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).
- In a mixing bowl, combine 1 cup all-purpose flour, 1/4 cup sugar, 1 teaspoon baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Whisk well.
- In another bowl, whisk together 1/2 cup milk, 1 egg, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract until blended.
- Gradually stir the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until just combined. A few lumps are okay.
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface. Roll out to about 1/2 inch thick and cut into strips 1 inch wide and 4 inches long.
Frying
- Carefully drop a few strips into the hot oil and fry for 2-3 minutes, turning until golden brown.
- Remove the donut sticks from the oil and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
- While still warm, roll the sticks in the remaining sugar to coat.
- Serve warm with coffee or hot chocolate.
Notes
For best results, avoid overcrowding the pot while frying. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
