Ingredients

Dough Ingredients
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour Use a high-quality brand like King Arthur Flour for best results.
  • 1/4 cup sugar Regular granulated sugar works perfectly.
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder Make sure it’s fresh for the best rise.
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt Enhances the sweetness.
  • 1/2 cup milk Full-fat milk recommended, or use dairy-free options.
  • 1 large egg Room temperature yields fluffier dough.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract For aroma and flavor, Nielsen-Massey recommended.
For Frying and Coating
  • Vegetable oil, for frying Use a neutral oil like canola or sunflower.
  • 1/2 cup sugar for coating Optional: Add cinnamon for extra flavor.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine 1 cup all-purpose flour, 1/4 cup sugar, 1 teaspoon baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Whisk well.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together 1/2 cup milk, 1 egg, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract until blended.
  4. Gradually stir the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until just combined. A few lumps are okay.
  5. Transfer the dough to a floured surface. Roll out to about 1/2 inch thick and cut into strips 1 inch wide and 4 inches long.
Frying
  1. Carefully drop a few strips into the hot oil and fry for 2-3 minutes, turning until golden brown.
  2. Remove the donut sticks from the oil and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
  3. While still warm, roll the sticks in the remaining sugar to coat.
  4. Serve warm with coffee or hot chocolate.

Notes

For best results, avoid overcrowding the pot while frying. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
