Ingredients

Biscuit Base
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour Using a quality all-purpose flour, like King Arthur Flour, will yield the best results.
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder Ensure it’s fresh for that perfect lift.
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar Optional, but it provides subtle sweetness to the dough.
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt Enhances all the flavors!
  • 2 cups buttermilk For richness and moisture; a mix of regular milk and vinegar or lemon juice can work in a pinch.
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted Use real butter for the best taste; Kerrygold is a favorite.
Cinnamon Sugar Mixture
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar, packed The molasses in brown sugar adds depth to the sweetness.
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon You’ll want this for the buttery mixture under your biscuits.
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar For topping.
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon For topping.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C). This high temperature helps achieve those perfectly golden tops.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar, and kosher salt until thoroughly combined.
  3. Pour the buttermilk into the dry mixture. Gently stir until just combined, being careful not to overwork the dough.
  4. In a small bowl, mix together the melted butter, light brown sugar, and ground cinnamon until smooth and combined.
Assembly
  1. Pour the cinnamon butter mixture into an 8×8-inch baking dish and spread it evenly across the bottom.
  2. Spoon the biscuit dough on top of the butter mixture, gently spread it to the edges without mixing.
  3. In another small bowl, mix the 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar with 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon. Sprinkle this over the unbaked biscuits.
  4. Using a sharp knife, score the dough into 9 equal squares, creating a 3 by 3 pattern.
Baking
  1. Place the baking dish in the oven and bake for 28-30 minutes or until golden brown.
  2. Once out of the oven, sprinkle the remaining cinnamon sugar mixture on top while still warm.
Serving
  1. Serve immediately for a warm, delightful treat.
