Ingredients

Brownie Base
  • 1 batch homemade brownies (or one boxed mix), baked and cooled
  • 1 tsp espresso powder (optional, for deepening the chocolate flavor)
Pudding Layer
  • 1 box (5.1 oz) instant chocolate pudding mix
  • 3 cups cold milk
Whipped Cream Layer
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 1/3 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tub (8 oz) whipped topping (optional, for added creaminess)
Toppings
  • Chocolate chips or shavings (optional, for garnish)
  • Crushed cookies (Oreos or chocolate wafers are perfect)
  • Caramel or chocolate sauce for drizzling (optional)

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven and whip up your favorite brownie recipe or a boxed mix, adding in espresso powder if desired. Once baked, allow them to cool completely, then cut into 1-inch cubes.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the instant pudding mix and cold milk for about 2 minutes until well-blended. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes to thicken and then refrigerate.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, beat the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract using an electric mixer until soft peaks form. (If using whipped topping, you can skip this step!)
Layering
  1. In a large glass dish or individual dessert cups, begin layering the ingredients! Start with a layer of brownie cubes, then a layer of chocolate pudding, followed by a generous dollop of whipped cream. Repeat these layers until your container is full, finishing with a big layer of whipped cream on top.
  2. Sprinkle chocolate chips or cookies crumbs on top and drizzle with caramel or chocolate sauce for an extra touch.
Chill
  1. Chill for at least 30 minutes in the refrigerator before serving to let the flavors meld together.

Notes

If making the trifle a day in advance, assemble the dessert but add toppings just before serving for freshness. This dessert can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
