Ingredients

For the Blueberry Syrup
  • 1 cup fresh blueberries Use ripe, juicy blueberries for maximum flavor.
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar Adjust to taste; honey can be used as a substitute.
  • 1 cup cold water Used for making the syrup.
For the Lemonade
  • 4-5 large lemons Freshly squeezed (about 1 cup juice). Use room-temp lemons for easier juicing.
  • 3 cups cold water Remaining water to mix with syrup.
  • Crushed ice For serving.
  • Lemon slices For garnish.
  • Additional blueberries For garnish.

Method

Make the Blueberry Syrup
  1. In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup of fresh blueberries, 3/4 cup granulated sugar, and 1 cup of cold water. Bring this mixture to a gentle simmer over medium heat. Stir frequently until the sugar completely dissolves, and the blueberries begin to burst, about 5-7 minutes.
Prepare the Mixture
  1. After the blueberries have burst, gently mash them with a fork or the back of a spoon to release more flavor.
  2. Place a fine mesh sieve over a medium bowl and carefully pour the blueberry mixture through it. Using the back of a spoon, press down on the solids to extract as much liquid as possible. Discard the solids.
  3. In a large pitcher, mix your strained blueberry syrup with 1 cup of freshly squeezed lemon juice and the remaining 3 cups of cold water. Stir it all together to combine beautifully.
Serve
  1. Fill a tall glass with crushed ice, pour the lemonade over it, and top with lemon slices and a few fresh blueberries for a gorgeous presentation.

Notes

Store in an airtight pitcher in the fridge for up to 3 days. For a sweeter drink, adjust sugar to your liking. Consider adding mint or basil for an herbal twist.
