Ingredients

For the Hot Chocolate Base
  • 2 cups whole milk You can substitute with almond or oat milk for a dairy-free version
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar Adjust to taste; brown sugar can also add a lovely molasses flavor
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder High-quality cocoa will enhance the chocolate flavor
  • 2 tablespoons milk chocolate, chopped Ghirardelli recommended for a rich flavor
  • 2 tablespoons dark chocolate, chopped Choose 70% cacao or higher for depth
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract Pure vanilla is a must for the best flavor
  • 3 ounces bourbon Choose your favorite brand for a personalized touch
  • mini marshmallows For topping (or consider homemade for a gourmet spin)
  • chocolate curls For garnish (optional, but they make your drink look irresistibly fancy)

Method

Preparation
  1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the milk, sugar, and cocoa powder. Whisk continuously for about 5-7 minutes until the mixture is hot and steaming—not boiling—to prevent scorching.
  2. Once the mixture is steaming, add in the chopped milk chocolate and dark chocolate. Stir until completely melted and the mixture is smooth, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Remove the pan from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and bourbon.
  4. Pour the hot chocolate into two heat-safe mugs. Top generously with mini marshmallows and sprinkle with chocolate curls.

Notes

For best results, let your milk come to room temperature before starting. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
